57th Adelaide Fringe

On Tuesday, 11 July 2017, we joined other Fringe festivals all over the world in celebrating World Fringe Day! It was day to celebrate the very idea of a 'Fringe', which was first introduced to the world by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 70 years ago. The concept of a 'Fringe' was born as a more democratic alternative to curated festivals, with an open access model allowing for creative freedom across a broad range of artforms. Here at Adelaide Fringe, we celebrated and paid hommage to our big sister, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with a celebration featuring a traditional Scottish dance called a 'cèilidh'. We'd love to see your favourite Fringe memories, so use #worldfringeday on your social posts to share them with us!

ON ONE CONDITION

Growing up in rural South Australia, Dan Daw first set foot on the stage when he was 12. Knowing no limitations, he then went on to forge an international career in London. Now 33, Dan takes time to reflect on the rollercoaster ride that has led him here... Drawing on stories from Dan's lived experiences, On One Condition asks us to question our own perceptions of normal while offering a bare bones, stripped back look at the world we live in.

We invite you into Dan's childhood home and on a journey overseas to share in one man's undying search for perfection, as he attempts to hold the world on his shoulders in all its beauty and grotesqueness.

Directed by Graham Adey in collaboration with performer Dan Daw and in partnership with Murmuration (AUS). "On One Condition etches itself into the consciousness through its artistic power" (Ingela Brovik, Dance Magazine Sweden)

SCORCH

For those who don’t feel like they’re in the right life, on-line is a place to be yourself. “Happiness. Aching, constant, consuming - on there it's more real than real life. I’m honest on there. I’m being honest.” Out in the real world though, things can be very different. A story of first love through the eyes of a gender-curious teen Scorch examines how the human story often gets lost amidst the headlines. Inspired by recent court cases Scorch has been awarded a Scotsman Fringe First and Best New Play at the 2015 Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards.

HELLO...IT'S ME

A theatrical fusion of stand up, clown and burlesque; exploring a young woman’s desire to be taken seriously in an era where ‘self-branding’ is paramount.

Armed with pop culture, Kathy Richfield navigates her way through the complexities of dating, sexuality, drug and alcohol abuse and the fear of rejection. A florescent, bubble, glitter rave.

HANNAH GADSBY - NANETTE

This show was inspired by a woman who goes by the name Nanette. Although we did not exchange a single word or even a glance, Nanette has changed my life. She hasn't at all, but she did prompt me to think about some things and those things I thought have become this show. Cool stuff. Hannah is an award-winning Australian comedian who thinks quickly and moves slowly. She is sardonic, laconic and, after numerous bone crunching accidents, bionic. Her droll delivery, delightful wordplay and heartbreakingly funny, self-deprecating observations have delighted audiences all over the world.

JOSH GLANC - MANFÜL

WINNER PERTH FRINGE WORLD COMEDY AWARD 2017

NOMINATED BEST COMEDY MELBOURNE FRINGE 2016

Josh Glanc’s debut show '99 SCHNITZELS' was a cult smash hit last year. It sold out fringe festivals and saw Glanc labelled one of comedy’s most exciting “emerging talents” by The Age.

Fresh from a sell out season and winning the ‘best comedy’ award at Perth Fringe World, Glanc follows up last year's hit with his latest creation, Dicky Rosenthal – the hyper-masculine, image-conscious ‘American beefcake’. Combining high-wired silliness and subversive social observation, manfül is one of this year’s must-see shows. Absurd, insightful and achingly funny!

“Glanc is hilarious” ★★★★½ The Music

“Ever stepped inside a tornado? Or climbed into Joshua Glanc’s head? Chances are it’s a no but my guess is they’d be one and the same. Surreal, frenetic, peculiar... indisputably energising” ★★★★ Herald Sun

“Bizarre, provocative, random, clever, Glanc confidently combines several comedic elements in a manner that belies his relative inexperience... go see him” ★★★★½ The Advertiser

“I’m not quite sure what just happened but whatever it was, it was hilariously ingenious.” The Clothesline

'We Live By the Sea' comes to Adelaide fresh from critically acclaimed runs at the SoHo Playhouse (New York) and at the Arts Theatre in London's West End. At the Edinburgh Festival it was nominated for a Fringe First, the most prestigious award for new writing, and sold out its entire run.

TRAINSPOTTING

Choose Life.

A pumping rave. A no-holds-barred, action-driven story of Mark Renton and his friends, living through the Edinburgh heroin scene of the ‘80s. Recapture the passion and the controversy of Irvine Welsh’s famous novel and then globally successful film in this all-new immersive production where the audience are literally part of the show, including the notorious “Worst Toilet in Scotland” scene.

This award-winning 21st anniversary production performed by In Your Face Theatre’s Scottish cast affirms the power and humour of this piece which left Welsh himself “blown away”. For avid fans this is a must-see and for Trainspotting virgins this is one you won’t forget!

IVAN ARISTEGUIETA - JUITHY

Everyone's favourite Venezuelan is back with a sweet and juithy new show. He's one happy immigrant and he's squeezing all the privileges the First-World can give him. From his own ABC sitcom, Lost in Pronunciation, to his debut live stand-up TV special, Chorizo Sizzle, Ivan exploded on to the scene in 2016 with his brilliant observations on Aussie culture and food, taking him around the country, headlining theatres and selling out festivals. As Ivan toured, he noticed a lot of similarities between ex-pats and locals. They both love their country, just in different ways, and that to be a true 'Aussie', he has to stop loving Australia, and start whinging about it. That's when he'll know he has made it. But that's bloody hard when Australia is so a-mazing! Sausage sizzles, toilet paper in public parks and 24-hour bakeries? The mango truly is juithier on the other side. You're not the lucky country. You're the juithy country. Go on, say it. Juithy. Best Newcomer, Sydney Comedy Festival.

MY NAME IS SAOIRSE

Rural Ireland, 1987. Saoirse lives in a peach coloured bungalow with her Dad and big brother Brendan. Her best friend is Siobhán, who has a glorious fountain of ginger hair, a whisper like a foghorn and an arse that distracts all the men at mass. Saoirse prefers running through fields to chasing after boys, but Siobhán has other ideas. After a night out drinking with the lads, Saoirse discovers her pregnancy and is forced to set out on journey that will take her miles away from her home and the carefree adolescence she once knew.

'My Name is Saoirse' (meaning freedom in Irish) is an award-winning one woman show. It is a tender and moving coming of age story that follows Saoirse, an ordinary, extraordinary 15 year old growing up in conservative Catholic Ireland.

LUKE HEGGIE - ROUGH DIAMANTÉ

Luke Heggie is back with another harsh but fair show about idiots. He is known widely for speaking to audiences as their equal, offering them a temporary escape from their banal, stupid, and largely pointless lives.

If you are the kind of person who eats a banana with the string still on, you play competition frisbee, you wear velcro shoes despite being an adult with more than zero arms, you've changed your mind after a chef has begun cooking your meal, you're in charge of a blog, your signature takes longer than 3 seconds to complete, you say "everybody" at the end of a lot of your sentences, you say "that's a great age" about someone's children, or you engage in unsolicited traffic direction, then do not come to this show. There will be adult themes, and foul language. If that's not acceptable to your sensibilities, grow up.

★★★★ "Absolutely rips along." Herald Sun

★★★★1/2 "A unique, powerful and insightful Australian comic voice." Sydney Morning Herald

TESSA WATERS: FULLY SIK

Waters is a Gaulier trained dynamo and the "Undisputed Queen of Stupidity" (Broadway Baby) and is returning to home soil after a stonking 2016 tour around the globe.

THE PLACES YOU'LL GO

The Places You'll Go is a topsy-turvy, original comedy with a taste of Dr. Seuss; a lighthearted look at success, self-determination, and of course, mail!

Two postmen contemplate Life, Happiness and, most importantly, What's Missing?

On their quest for life’s purpose, they bump into characters that glow with their own achievements and are quick to deliver their own advice, but the solutions seem scarce.

New York/Israeli Playwright Hila Ben Gera brings this surreal comedy to Adelaide Fringe for it’s Australian premiere with a local director and cast.

Directed by Cassandra Fumi.

Cast: Tom Halls, Grace Lowry, Sean Rees, Alex Roe and Hila Ben Gera.

"Brimming with talent!" ★★★★★ The Adelaidian.

"The beauty is in the grey." ★★★★ The Advertiser.

"This show is not like others!" ★★★★ Glam Adelaide.
