The "world of the spectacle" questions Bernard Faivre d'Arcier, a senior official of the Ministry of Culture, appointed to direct the Festival to the general surprise, but with the backing of Paul Puaux.

With this young enarque of 35 years it is a new generation to the controls and BFA to be renewed the Festival of Avignon during the five years of the duration of its mandate. Bernard Faivre d'Arcier is in the midst of a program in the continuity of his predecessor, this 34th Festival is that of the transition.

Unleashing the social and political vocation of the theater dear to Vilar, young authors and directors turned to a more formal theater. Thus at the Court of Honor, Jorge Lavelli proposes a "Tale of Winter" by Shakespeare with highly sought-after visual effects.

Prospero's island can neither be located geographically nor situated in time. True to its Shakespearean form, it contains the whole world and exposes power struggles and intrigues.

Prospero, shipwrecked there for the last ten years, stripped of his duchy of Milan by an ambitious brother, has the spoliation of a throne re-enacted by castaways - the very same who were henchmen yesterday are the victims today.

Prospero is the magician of this Tempest: he orchestrates the passions in order to live them out better - from the inside - to free himself from them - once and for all, and thus return to the world.

For Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Prospero is not aged, but a man in full maturity, the time when one observes oneself and wants to dominate one's own story.

The island is the place where personal histories are woven into History. The island is also the symbolic representation of one's body, with Ariel on the head and Caliban below the belt. In this symbolic body, tales flow and each scene represents one passion: love, ambition, lust, hate, violence, politics..

A "foul toad", "hedgehog", "elfish-marked", "abortive", "rooting hog": all are images Shakespeare puts in the mouths of his characters to illustrate the ugliness of Richard III, the cruel and blood-thirsty king who kills his brothers to become the ruler of England.

Geneviève de Kermabon was less attracted to Richard III as a political play than as a play about the king's inhuman behaviour. She sees his attitude born out of his disgrace and the inhuman regard that those close to him, including his mother, cast upon him.

The director does not however, seek to justify the various acts of cruelty committed by a tyrant. On the contrary, it is a quest for truth among his most contradictory acts: when he loves, cries or kills.
