The National Theater Festival will be held from 20 October to 30 October 2017.

Romanian theater: from FNT - on major European scenes

It is a great pleasure to welcome the success achieved by the Hungarian State Theater Cluj, for the first time at the Almagro Classic International Theater Festival (FITCA), Spain, with William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar", directed by Silviu Purcarete.

The artistic director of the Festival is theater critic Marina Constantinescu.

 

HAMLET|COLLAGE text of William Shakespeare

Directed by: Robert Lepage

This is the first Russian production of the legendary Canadian theater director Robert Lepage.

The preparations lasted for more than two years, and the result is a hi-tech show for a single actor and over twenty members of the team, from technicians to plateau directors, electricians, props, sound and image engineers.

All the actions of the play take place in Hamlet's imagination, and the character is revealed to the audience in his room from an asylum of mental illness.

Robert Lepage and Evgeny Mironov managed to create a large-scale tragedy of the mind that turned out to be more disturbing than the real-life tragedy.

"Hamlet's main problem is that he thinks too much." His character uses his brain all the time. "The skull is a powerful symbol of Hamlet's theater and theater, and Shakespeare created the important scene of the skull, which is, after all, human, is the head of a man. "

We challenge Bucharest to give up for a moment to any trace of pragmatism and to be seduced by the spectral aroma of the Pirandelian café.

A hallucinatory world, where the boundary between reality and dream is fragile, will open up and absorb every fantasy in its fantastic dimensions.

As soon as they cross the threshold of the theater, they will become customers of a deserted night coffee, located somewhere near a train station, where no rational law will find its coherence.

Kafta’s The Trial is like a dream. Despite the sombre image we tend to associate to him, Kafta was a dreamer, and his works carry that dream substance in them, from their structure to the strangeness of the images, sounds, ideas and emotions that they convey.

His writings imitate at an almost absurd level the irrational and scary madness of this nocturnal universe in movement that we call “dream”.

Perhaps the most famous piece written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth portrays the fresco of the rise and fall of a general brave who, though victorious on the battlefield, is finally overwhelmed by the thirst for power.

Death prowls, guilt spawns monsters, and suffering, crushed and captive between the moving walls of the constantly shape shifting stage, absolves and brings in the Light.

King Lear is set in the court of an ageing British monarch. Shakespeare probably wrote it in around 1604, sandwiched between two other great tragedies, Othello and Macbeth.

Bearing the stamp of his Albanian origins and culture, Angelin Preljocaj chose to set this universal love story in the totalitarian regime of an East European country.

It is not a question of a fight between clans as tradition would have it, but of a confrontation between the militia responsible for keeping social order and the “family” of the homeless.

When the curtain rises, Vienna’s streets vibrate with whispers.

It is rumoured that, driven by envy, the now elderly composer Antonio Salieri killed the famous Mozart thirty two years ago.

We set upon a journey, guided by Salieri himself, through the dark corners of his memory, witnessing all the episodes of his relationship with Mozart.

As a child, Salieri made a deal with God.

He asked to be a famous composer, in return pledging his entire creation to the celestial glory. As he becomes the court composer of the Habsburg Empire, he makes the acquaintance of Mozart, and thus his convenient existence starts to fall apart.

How can a music of unearthly beauty, proof of the divine genius, “the voice of God”, as Salieri calls it, be brought into this world by such a petty, vicious creature?

And above all, how could God betray him like that, when he dedicated all his life and career to His glory?

Full of envy and devoured by his own mediocrity, Salieri pretends to be Mozart’s friend, determined to destroy him.

A perfidious game, at the end of which both men fall. Mozart dies in misery, sickness and vice, while Salieri is doomed to live and witness how his rival’s music stands the test of time.

In the old days, when the Earth seemed to be closer to the sky, Prince Charming, the Tear-Begotten is born.

He grows up, nurtured by his parents’ love, and when he is ready, he leaves for a voyage, looking for the gift he was promised at his birth – immortality and eternal youth.

He discovers a world in which Death is pacing carefully among the living, together with his loyal magical horse, he succeeds in defeating the enemies he meets on the way: the Forest Hag, the Shadows Hag and the Hunter.

He meets his love, Ileana Consânzeana, but he prays that she waits for him – his journey is about to continue in a place that has its own rules, and where he is finally about to find life without death.

But this does not come alone, it also brings forgetting, and the hero risks losing himself.

Iubirea la oameni (Love of People) by Dmitri Bogoslavski

The story in Love of People focuses on the lives of three characters, bound with a thread that only death can break.

Luska is married to Kolya, a violent man and an alcoholic, while Sergey, the village policeman, who has been in love with Luska for many years, tries to win back his lost love, when he finds out that Luska’s husband has disappeared.

It is an environment where people are more often than not brutalized, the men are violent and the women – their silent victims.

But behind the appearance of the ordinary, unsuspected dramas unravel.

Prințul nefericit (The Double Inconstancy ) by Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux

The text is a comedy in three acts built on the principles of the Commedia dell’arte, with Arlechino and Trivelin, essential characters of this type of theatrical improvisation, and a surprisingly modern structure for the time when it was written (the end of the 18th century).

It was first put on stage in 1723, by Italian comedians, at the famous Theatre of “Hôtel de Bourgogne” in Paris.

Just like other comedies by Marivaux, such as The Game of Love and Chance, Slave Island, The Triumph of Love, The False Servant and The Double Inconsistency, many of the characters around which the story is built belong to the Commedia dell’arte, with scenes solved in a comical note by the famous Arlechino, unsuspected drama, unspoken love, hallucinating secrets, unequalled betrayal and unprecedented conflicts.

All good comedies have good endings.

Will the prince eventually find the true love of his dreams?

Will Arlechino end up inconsolable or will there be two wedding in the end?!

Rocky Horror Show by Richard O`Brian

Janet and Brad – a newly engaged couple – are on their way to visit their professor, Dr. Everett Scott.

It is a rainy night, the two get lost and additionally, their car has a flat tire.

While trying to find a phone, they arrive at a castle and here things become more and more eerie.

The couple enters the world of doctor Frank N. Further, an alien from the Planet Transsexual in the Transylvania Galaxy.

In a hedonistic universe, doctor Frank seduces his new guests.

The young couple is invited to witness the insane doctor’s new creation: the ideal man, the perfect man, named Rocky Horror.

Măcelaria lui Iov (Job’s Butcher Shop ) by Fausto Paravidino

The social theme is represented by the producer’s relation with the banks, the suppliers and the usurers.

Job’s Butcher’s Shop is a politically moderate play built around a love story. Everything talks about brittleness.

The haunting image is the dolphin. And meat. And money.

The empire built from banknotes is extremely fragile.

In Job’s Book the prosperity became converted in a disaster.

Umbre (Shadows ) by Marilia Samper

Three families marked by loss: a married couple which falls apart after the disappearance of their adolescent daughter; a father and son unable to communicate because of the absence of the mother; an elderly couple whose happiness is threatened by the thought of losing one another.

Wracked by pain, anguish, and uncertainty, they confront as best they can their particular tragedy, but little by little their lives will intersect until they blend into the same story, like in a puzzle: that of Alba, lost in the thickness of the forest, and her own journey through pain and into salvation.

Camera mea frigorifică (My Cold Room ) by Joël Pommerat

Following its Paris premiere in 2011 and several performances in Canada, the United States and Europe, Ma chambre froide by contemporary French playwright and director Joël Pommerat received the Molière Prize as well as the yearly French Critics’ Prize.

The play is put to the stage of Szigligeti Theatre by director Theodor Cristian Popescu, at his second collaboration with the company in Oradea after several works in European and American theatres.
